The 17th ASEAN University Games (AUG) was held in Palembang, Indonesia from 11-21 December 2014, and opened with great fanfare at the Gelora Sriwijaya (Jakabaring) Stadium as Indonesian Vice-President Jusuf Kalla presided over the launch of the games in the southern Sumatran city. All in all, 20 sports were played in 18 venues across Palembang City.

The host nation emerged as overall champions with 190 medals, bagging 66 gold medals, 78 silver medals and 46 bronze medals at the games. In total, Indonesia sealed their 11th win in terms of number of AUGs won, placing them far ahead of Thailand (overall wins in 1988, 1999 and 2010) and Malaysia (overall wins in 2008 and 2012).

Student athletes from Singapore put in a strong showing at the games. In the end, the lion city finished in 7th place overall with 4 golds, 7 silvers and 13 bronzes. Singapore emerged as champions in men’s archery, fencing (men’s and women’s) as well as men’s Wushu Tajiquan.
