Sonenalath Anouphab of the Laos’ mens basketball team is seeking to use the 2016 ASEAN University Games as a springboard for the upcoming South East Asian (SEA) Games held in Malaysia next year.
Anouphab is seeking to make up for a missed opportunity as Laos did not participate in Basketball at the previous SEA Games held in Singapore last year.
He believes that this ASEAN University Games will be a good warmup for the upcoming SEA Games, saying, “We can get many, many new experiences from this University Games and we have the opportunity to try to do the best as much as we can.”
The 21-year- old started playing basketball when he was 16 and considers Kyrie Irving as his idol.
The Laos American College student has been one of the better performers for Laos so far in this tournament despite suffering two losses against Thailand and Singapore.
He made six out of twelve field goals during the match against Thailand, topping the charts for his team. He also played the most minutes during that match, signalling the coach’s faith in his abilities.
With four out of the five competing nations progressing to the semi-finals, Laos are in danger of missing out on a medal.
However, Anouphab is simply focusing on performing well for the remaining matches rather than results, saying, “For me I think I will try to do my best.”
