Having competed in various swimming tournaments and collected an assortment of medals, Ariana Herranz of the Philippines swimming team is not letting her exploits in the pool distract her from her priorities.

The top student from Ateneo de Manila University is participating in her second ASEAN University Games and reclaimed bronze for the Women’s 200m Backstroke event on Wednesday.

Juggling both swimming and studies has not been easy, with a gruelling schedule of having trainings twice a day during weekdays while also going for classes.

Herranz said, “We train in our university so it is easier for us and we have to make time for academics because we are not just an athlete.

We are a student and an athlete and being a student should always come first so we really try and balance it.”

The 20-year-old is also relishing the valuable experience this Games is providing.

She said, “We get to compete with really high ranked swimmers who wins medals in the SEA games and some of them represented their country in the Olympics, so its really a good competition at a really high level.”

Having represented her nation at various Southeast Asia age group competitions, Herranz is hungry for more, saying, “I hope I can represent my country in the SEA Games next year and upcoming ones.”
